How Malware Hides Inside Email Attachments

Malware Disguised as Everyday Files

Malicious attachments often appear as:

• Invoices or receipts 
• Shipping confirmations 
• Job applications or resumes 
• Password-protected ZIP files 
• Scanned documents or PDFs 

Because these file types are common in business and personal emails, users often open them without thinking twice.

Embedded Scripts and Macros

Some malware hides inside Microsoft Word or Excel files using macros. When you open the file, it may prompt you to click “Enable Content.” Once enabled, the malicious code runs silently in the background.

Compressed and Executable Files

Attackers also use:

• .zip, .rar, or .7z files to hide malware 
• Executable files disguised with double extensions like invoice.pdf.exe 

Once opened, the malware installs itself without obvious signs.
